MarTEL - Maritime Tests of English Language
At the time of the project’s proposal, there was no international or European standard
for Maritime English. The MarTEL partnership was created in order to respond to
the need (identified by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in 2006) for
a standard of Maritime English to be established. Through transfer of innovation
from existing English Language standards and Maritime English model courses, the
MarTEL partnership created a set of Maritime English Language tests for seafarers
at all stages of their careers, from cadet to senior officer, which incorporated
the IMO’s Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP).

SeaTALK - Creation of a Qualification Framework for Effective Communication at Sea
SeaTALK aims to establish a harmonised comprehensive framework for Maritime English Education and Training, where a standard
approach to teaching, learning, assessment and transparency of qualifications throughout Europe is established for
each type and rank of seafarers. It will establish a Maritime English ECVET model for mutual recognition and transparency
of learning outcomes and competences. The framework will take the IMO and EU requirements into consideration as well as
incorporating the achieved outcomes of recent EU funded Maritime English projects, including the developed e-learning
platform.
The project website is currently under construction.
CAPTAINS - Communication and Practical Training in Applied Nautical Studies
CAPTAINS (Communication and Practical Training in Applied Nautical Studies) is an EU Leonardo Transfer
of Innovation project which aims to make a significant contribution to maritime education and training.
The project will collate existing knowledge regarding linguistic, paralinguistic, and cultural issues
that act as barriers in communication on board multi-nationally crewed ships, and create interactive
online communication training courses for seafarers.
The CAPTAINS project will contribute to an enhanced safety at sea culture by providing a means for seafarers
to improve their English language communication skills. The partnership will transfer innovation by combining
advanced e-learning and collaboration tools with interactive rich media learning contents, taking into
consideration scenario-based and experiential learning.
